Shelburne, Nova Scotia to Host a Cool Community Christmas Event
Published December 1st, 2024
Recently, we wrote about the details of a massive lobster trap tree at Lower Sandy Point Wharf in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. There’s also a video of the lobster trap tree that’s making the rounds we invite you watch!
Now, we’re continuing the conversation by sharing a cool community Christmas event happening on Wednesday, December 18th at 6:00 pm.
It happens at the same place the lobster trap tree is and features Santa.
Will he fly in via reindeer? Will he get a ride from the elves? Nope - he’s arriving by boat!
Organizers Greg Sutcliffe and Teddy Belong held this event in 2023 for the community, which was well-received. This year, they’re expecting over 200 families.
As Sutcliffe says, “this year we have decided to up the ante by including a live array of Christmas carollers, an accompanying organ player, we’ll be handing out song sheets, providing an instant, take home photo by a professional photographer for each family with Santa, plus, a gift for every child who attends, barbecued hot dogs and hot chocolate. We are hoping for good weather, lots of people and the merriest of occasions.”
Here’s our Q&A with Sutcliffe and Belong about the event:
1. Where exactly is the event taking place?
40 Goodick Road, Lower Sandy Point Wharf, Shelburne County.
2. Which boat will Santa be arriving on?
Captain Teddy Belong’s “ Just a Jumpin “ 40 foot lobster boat will be Santa’s vessel.
3. How many carollers will there be and who's playing the organ?
Mike Ozon is on the organ. 4 carollers with the view for participation from the crowd
4. How long will the event go on for?
Likely two to three hours, beginning at 6pm until all photos have been taken.
5. Ensuring every child who attends gets a gift is admirable; what prompted this decision?
A collection of local fisherman getting together, deciding to fund the activity for the betterment of the kids at Christmas and community spirit.
6. How can this within and outside of your community get involved?
Simply by showing up on December 18th at 6pm.
7. If attendees want to support you, how can/should they do that?
The local fisherman want this to be a free event. For those that need to donate, our local food bank would welcome donations. We will have a box on site to accept food donations only.
